I'm sure a LOT of people reading this journal for the first time would be asking themselves the same question.
Captain WHO???
Captain Canuck is the creation of Richard Comely, and has been part of Canada's comic book heritage since 1974. The Captain has appeared not only in his own self-titled publications, but on Canadian postage stamps, Canadian television, a syndicated Canadian newspaper comic strip, and a wide range of products from badges to pins to t-shirts. People from around the world have read the adventures of Captain Canuck, and many still seek his older books out to add to their collections.
My own personal involvement with the good captain is a little more recent.
After a less than successful attempt at studying Classical Animation, I spent years at crappy jobs before I took a leap of faith and opened my very own comic book shop in Cambridge, Ontario, CANADA. As luck would have it, Cambridge is the home of Richard Comely.
I first met Richard in person when he came in to my shop one day in 2003, and asked if I'd be interested in purchasing some of his older issues. He was happy to sign them for me... and I was happy to take some. I've always told myself that I would do all I could to support local artists, and here I was with the creator of "Canada's Greatest Superhero" standing in my shop. How could I not?
Thus began our relationship that has continued to this day. Richard stops by when the mood strikes him, restocks my copies of Captain Canuck books (or t-shirts), we chat for a bit and talk about comics, his current projects (of which he always seems to have many), and of course, what might lay in store for the future of Captain Canuck.
Last year, Richard stopped by my shop for Free Comic Book Day. He was on hand to sign copies of "Captain Canuck: Legacy" and to promote the Hardcover Collection that IDW was publishing of his older works. We had a lot of people turn out for his signing. Richard was gracious and he was happy to chat with everyone. He signed books, trading cards, old posters and even original artwork he was willing to part with. The kids took a particular shine to Richard, and to the good Captain. I heard several parents tell their children that Captain Canuck was "OUR hero".
Sure he's a little corny, but hey, you could really say that about any character that slides into a spandex bodysuit to fight crime. He's not an overly violent hero, his books aren't peppered with curse words and gratuitous cleavage shots. But what he does have in abundance is heart, and the ability even after all these years to inspire a sense of national pride in the people he represents. He's a GOOD GUY, plain and simple, and the world needs those kind of heroes.
Richard and I have been talking over the past year about rebooting the Captain Canuck franchise in the months to come. I have been working on several character designs for a new, kid-friendly "Captain Canuck Jr.".... I'm hoping to encapsulate the feel of all the current kid's comics that I love (Tiny Titans, Marvel Super Hero Squad, Power Pack) with all the charm and yes, CORNINESS of our beloved Captain Canuck Sr. Richard has given me the go-ahead to pursue this further, and I hope to have a lot of work done on it by the end of this summer!
What I would also like to do, sort of as a gift to Richard for all his years of trying his hardest to keep the Captain alive in the minds of his countrymen and the rest of the world, is put together an Art Book. One that would showcase the Captain in all his glory and potential. For that I need you, the good people of Deviant Art to help. But I am willing to make this interesting for those that assist me. Let this be our thank you to Mr. Comely for giving Canada it's greatest hero!

Variations or additional props are allowed and encouraged, but not other characters from outside the world of Captain Canuck, unless they are generic villains, aliens, extras, etc... Your artwork can be a simple portrait, or an all out battle between Captain Canuck and an alien horde....
Want to create an "Ultimate" version? An "Elseworlds" Captain Canuck? FUTURE Captain? DISCO Cap? WWII Captain Canuck? FEMALE CAPTAIN CANUCK??? Feel free... just keep with the spirit of the character, that's all I ask...
Absolutely NO NUDITY, GRAPHIC SEXUALITY, GRAPHIC VIOLENCE, or GRAPHIC LANGUAGE can be part of your artwork. Canadian stereo-types however, are welcome, as long as they are in good fun. You can have him fighting aliens, wrestling a Polar Bear, saving a damsel in distress, floating in space or playing hockey... really whatever strikes your fancy. Artwork can be serious or humorous, use your style to envision the Captain as you see him.. and HAVE FUN WITH IT!
Lastly, please remember the intention of this contest is to pay TRIBUTE to CAPTAIN CANUCK and to honor is creator Richard Comely, so please treat the character with the respect that it deserves.
